It all started in the 1970s when a group of like-minded people were expelled from their homes in East Africa and arrived on the shores of the UK. Faced with a new country and culture, they decided to create their own community to help maintain their connection to their cultural and ancestral heritage.
Although we do not have exact facts, we understand that the first meeting was held on the 13th of September 1970 instigated by Jayanti Vadher, with twenty-one members of the Mochi community. This was chaired by the late Monjibhai D Vaghela at his home in Kilburn, North West London. It was decided there to form a group, or “Mandal” called, and so the principle of a community was born. The ball was then set in motion and it wasn’t until three years later in 1973, that JKSM (Jan Kshatriya Sevak Mandal) was officially created as a registered charity.
The community prides itself on our charitable activities and every year holds a Diwali function for all members to attend.
Under the leadership of the current president, Nilesh Nagar, the committee invested in a property which was purchased in 2015. This is a registered asset that helps to subsidise our events and is currently rented to a lady with learning difficulties in Strood, Kent.
It has taken the collective efforts of numerous past committee members to keep the community alive and thriving. We owe gratitude to them all, and whilst we can’t list them, here are the past presidents:
Lalji Devshi Vadher (from 1973 to 19XX)
Tulsibhai Nagar (from 19XX to 19XX)
Naran Parmar (from 19XX to 19XX)
Jayanti Vadher (from 19XX to 1999)
Upendra Kalan (from 1999 to 2009)
Vinod Nagar (from 2009 to 2014)
Nilesh Nagar (from 2014 to present)
Clearly JKSM has changed over the years, however the core founding principles remain.
JKSM Founding Principles:
Protect – standing up for who we are and what we believe in.
Preserve – ensuring our shared identity, culture and heritage can be passed on
Promote – sharing all the great things we do as a community and as individuals
Enhance – constantly improving physically, mentally and spiritually
Enrich – helping those around us to become better
